- Tell you one thing, this has been an exciting PBA season - and I'm not even referring to basketball being played on court. Players refusing to sign with teams, brawls with fans, walkouts and now, a controversial call that hands Purefoods two free throws to win the game in the dying seconds of Game 2. Norman Black, as commentator, was ripping on the refs on the air. And this says a lot because I'm sure PBA announcers are instructed to not say anything bad about the referees if possible. Tim Cone and Joaqui Trillo charged straight at the PBA technical committee. I don't know if Alaska has plans of putting the game under protest, but it certainly seemed that way judging from the reactions of their top guys.
- This Finals matchup reminds me a lot of the 2008 Boston Celtics-LA Lakers NBA Finals. Alaska, because of the triangle offense, will have those natural comparisons to the Phil Jackson-led Lakers. Purefoods, meanwhile, are playing physical and more importantly, mentally tough. The Aces are looking soft in this series and like the Lakers then, easily frustrated. When things come together, they can make big runs on the Giants, but Purefoods is very capable of grinding the game and wearing them down. Willie Miller is obviously Kobe Bryant in this analogy, and Kevin Garnett is Kerby Raymundo on offense and Rafi Reavis on defense. James Yap, meanwhile, is playing like a crazy Paul Pierce-Ray Allen hybrid. Joe Devance, I think, is Lamar Odom. He's very talented and if he plays well enough, he'll give the Aces a chance. But man, does he look overmatched by the Purefoods frontline at times. On a side note, the Celtics won that series so that doesn't bode too well for Alaska.
- Everything aside, though, I think this is an awesome series. Purefoods and Alaska have practically identical point differentials, pace-adjusted (at +5 over their opponents), which means the teams are pretty much evenly matched. Plenty of close games are expected, and judging by the first two - it has delivered so far. Oh, and for more pace-adjusted stuff, check out this Fire Quinito post of Game 1 of the series.

what's surprising is cone didn't seem to bother adjusting to gregorio's (or koy banal's) gamble of putting their bigs on tenorio. at one point in game 3 tenorio even dared to shoot from beyond the arc over marc pingris.
alaska's frontline doesn't seem to know what to do when thoss is not on the court, dela cruz is the only bright spot.
your 2008 NBA Finals analogy vis a vis 2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup finals is so pathetic.
KB24 is no choker. But KB8 was once. lol
Is this blogsite a portal of the sunuginsiquinito blogsite? Pareho ending nila eh... complimenting each other pa. lol
hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...
ive been thinking from the start of the finals, that pf has been tested so well since quarters and semis, thus making them tough and ready for the finals while aces marched to the finals easily thus missing a good pre-finals sparring. which i think likens to the nba 2008 series, wherein lakers easily marched to finals while boston had been tested roughly in the playoffs, making them tough enough to beat the lakers in the finals.
but dont ever compare kobe to miller. coz miller is not the best player in the pba, nor has he the tenacity of a good defender as kobe. and lastly, kobe time is showtime while miller time is choketime..lol.
@legendaryskyflakes25
kobe might not be a choker, but he did concede that series to the celtics.
if you remember that series, didnt it always seem that the lake show had control of the games at some point but would begin to wear down, especially mentally, as the game dragged on? thats kind of what alaska looks like in this series.
@butiking_mandirigma
haha. no, this isnt a portal or anything. but we are friends with jaemark. and have loads of respect for his basketball opinions.
@maeve
neither is kobe the best player in the nba. that lebron james fellow is actually pretty good too.
@j_myxx, LBJ? the one who doesnt win any games in finals? the one who regarded himself as the chosen one but doesnt win any ring?
ang BP...lol..
@maeve
you know what, im not a big lebron fan myself, but i do give credit where credit is due. you think LBJ couldnt win a championship with kobe's supporting cast?
to all,
the best player pa din sa buong mundo ay si wade! lol
ang kokontra, panget, panget, panget, at pinakapanget! lol
@maeve, maybe after KB retires.... lol
@skyflakes, oo na.... si wade na ang pinakamagaling! lol
@j_myxx and maeve
LBJ is still considered as one of the best.... presidents of US... hehehe... Lebron changed his number to what??? Wade is overated and ballhog. Seriously, all of them are nothing compared to **. LOL
Congrats PF !!! Historic win. Pagawan ko kayo ng rebulto...
hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...
@j_myxx,
dont talk about supporting casts coz some of lbj's casts last year are all stars. unless he will win a ring, stats are only stats. lol
he changed his number to honor MJ, what about the legendary Bill Russell? harhar..
kala ko legendary skyflakes25... lol
@kalbong_butiki aka gds pogi,
pwede din naman. lol
@maeve
cmon. mo williams was an all star but he never wouldve been if he didnt play next to lebron.
i remember someone posting on one of the prominent NBA sites that, adjusted for pace, LBJ already had a season that was statistically better than the big O's triple double season. lebron also is one of the few people to post single season PERs that are even remotely close to MJ.
and if i remember right, it took michael some time to win his first ring, too.
again, im not a lebron apologist. unless he moves to chicago in the off season, i probably dont even qualify as a lebron fan. still, the guy is pretty good. and imo, better than kobe.
lbj got his team to the finals with z, varejao, hughes, pavlovic. Kobe couldnt get his team past the 1st round with caron butler, lamar odom, smush parker. wade couldn't win with a supporting cast similar to LBJ's team in 2007. I like kobe more but if if u ask me whos the best player overall? its lebron. he's an asshole but I'd take him over kobe in any draft.
