Jared Dillinger gave the Talk n Text Tropang Texters a 2-0 lead in their best of five series against Ginebra after scoring off of an alley-oop inbounds play (starting from the 3:20 mark of the video).
The play was reminiscent of the one San Miguel drew up to force overtime against Alaska in their second round meeting, and the almost identical one that Alaska ran themselves a week later against this TNT team. TNT coach Chot Reyes admits to taking inspiration from those plays, saying "that's the way basketball is; you learn from other coaches."
It's a fairly simple play. Reyes had Renren Ritualo act as a decoy on a strong cut to the basket while Dillinger quietly snuck in a backdoor cut for an uncontested shot. It seems, though, that unless your team runs a similar play in the endgame, the players aren't prepared to defend against that kind of play. That's probably why it enjoys a pretty good success rate.
The other PBA coaches better start teaching their guys how to defend against these set plays.
But Jared, wow.
