Barangay Ginebra's Rico Villanueva, who is a notoriously bad free throw shooter, has taken to using the glass on his free throws. Well, as legendary Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach says in the video above, stick with what works. Villanueva banked in six of his nine free throw attempts.
PBA Friday must have been fun for supporters of former Ateneo Blue Eagles. There were ten of them in action on that game day. Smart Gilas nationals Japeth Aguilar, Chris Tiu and Rabeh Al-Hussaini opened things up with a win over Wesley Gonzales and the Coca-cola Tigers. Alaska's LA Tenorio and Larry Fonacier took the floor in an Aces win over Burger King. And Rico Villanueva, Rich Alvarez and JC Intal of Ginebra helped their team pick up a victory over Barako Bull, which had Magnum Membrere on the lineup. Ginebra's Paolo Bugia and Doug Kramer and Barako Bull's Gec Chia were not fielded in. That's a laundry list of all the relevant Ateneo stars of the past decade right there.
How badly did Cyrus Baguio need this performance? He's scored just 16 points through the first four games of the season. Against Barako Bull, he scored 22 points on an eFG% of .818 and a TS% of .920. That's just fantastic shooting. Also, two blocks and ZERO turnovers. Guess Ginebra will need more of that after old man Johnny Abarrientos, in the midst of a great performance himself, had to be taken to the hospital for a nasty, or as Dominic Uy called it, "a big ass", cut on his index finger. The Flying A had six assists and four rebounds in just 11 minutes of play.
