- Have we seen the best of Ryan Buenafe? Rick Olivares of Bleachers Brew briefly touches on the topic of the talented sophomore. He says Buenafe has "played two different roles on (Ateneo's) past two title teams." Last year, he was a pretty reliable finisher. This year, he was a regular ball-handler for the second unit. He also expanded his range to beyond the three-point line. In the finals, he also emerged as a decent defender. Seems to me like he could eventually end up doing pretty much everything.
- What do you suppose the Ian Sangalang versus Sudan Daniel match-up will look like three or four years from now? San Sebastian's Sangalang is already a terrific finisher in the paint, and San Beda's Daniel is a special shot-blocker. How much better will both get with one guy pushing the other year after year? I, for one, am interested in finding out.

will you be watching tomorrow's game? I'm really excited to finally see gilas (and lia) live. you think toroman will allow rabeh to post up considering giles doesnt post up that much despite his size?
JR and Reil has to show up for FEU. Those 2 guys in my opinion are going to be the keys for FEU. Ramos is going to be there night in and night out with his rebounding and help defense but these 2 guys doesn't really contribute much if they're not scoring.
Buanafe is a really good player but he's got to remain focused and grounded. His head might get a little bigger considering he has won a championship on every year he has been in the uaap.
Will Sudan be able to play 5 years? Ekwe played only 3 I believe. Why aren't uaap teams getting imports like Ekwe and Etame Joe? Too shy? So far it has only been FEU who has a non-Filipino playing significant minutes. Ian's a fantastic prospect. I hope Eala will consider this kid in his plans. I think he needs to improve on outside shooting and ball handling. I think he has speed to drive against guys like Sudan. Maybe the nexy kerby Raymundo as Coach Louie Alas said?
I forgot to commend you on your unbiased work. Great job! I didn't even notice that you were from ADMU. haha.
nope, won't be watching the game. not live, anyway. i'll definitely catch the delayed telecast, though. i'm not expecting too much from rabeh, considering he hasnt been with gilas in a while. i dont think he'll be allowed to post up too much. not yet. we haven't seen a lot of post-ups from the gilas system, but maybe that will change. hard to see them trying it without the luxury of running it over and over in practice first, though.
feu has plenty of talent left. rr garcia, paul sanga, pipo. that's a tough team to beat.
i think sudan is eligible for 5. uaap teams will start recruiting imports when the need arises. me and my brother talk about this a lot, and it will be a subject on one of my posts soon. im not a big fan of how san beda recruited sudan because im afraid it would end up in a foreign player arms race.
they've had ekwe before, sure. but the sudan thing is going to have to force other schools to take similar action or they'll be left behind. see jru with etame. you'll probably see other ncaa teams do it as well. its going to be an arms race, and im not so sure thats a good thing.
it might happen in the uaap soon. NU has a couple of foreign recruits on the pine, and if they end up as good as sudan, the other uaap teams will have no choice but to try to keep up.
sangalang, though. wow, right? did you catch that 28 point game he had mid-season? and he's going to get better.
thanks for the compliment, btw. i do try to make it a point to be objective.
haha. if that happens the uaap and the ncaa will be like the pba conference. and its not like beda will suck w/o daniels. Marcelo's a pretty decent player. Taganas can also play the 5 for them. The bad thing about guys like Ekwe is less exposure for Filipino players.
What about the PBA allowing a maximum of 1 naturalized player so that we'll still get to see guys like Ekwe? Allow only those guys who played college ball in RP so that we won't see a lot of rejected NBA players in the PBA.
yup, it was a blowout but still 28 points is 28 points. I think I saw him handle the ball on the break as well in that game. That really caught my attention. A big man who can finish and handle the ball? and he is a rookie right? Sounds like a perfect player in international ball. Isn't there a part of you that wants Gilas to get more players like this guy right now? Is it because he's from the ncaa?
i think marcelo is hugely underrated because he subs out for daniel. people think that when sudan sits, its a cakewalk but that's definitely not true.
hey, i'd like that there would be more NBA rejects in the PBA. like it or not, the fact that these guys are (or were) on the fringes of the NBA means they're better than the guys we have playing here now. that can only help raise the level of basketball we play here.
i see no reason in keeping foreign players who played college ball here out of the PBA. especially guys like kirk long who have been here practically all their lives. its not like your team gets unfair advantage from having ekwe or long, right? there are pinoy players better than those guys.
sangalang is nice, but he's still really raw. maybe the next RP team after gilas? sangalang, kiefer ravena, van opstal... ronald pascual has pretty good size considering the package of skills that he has.
i doubt there's ncaa bias on gilas. they have ballesteros, jazul and guevarra, remember. and they tried to get ogie menor, too. give me a couple of names that could have made the cut, when they were making the cuts. sena is undersized in the ncaa as it is, moreso in the international scene. wilson and jimbo only really emerged this year. wilson was a headache last year with his inconsistency and jimbo was just a backup. who else do you think should have made it?
Yeah and I would love to see Compton play again in the PBA. haha
yeah i guess you are right. dela pena and escobal were even heavily recruited as well. You think Toroman will consider putting Jimbo and Wilson on his pool now? Wilson was considered but was eventually cut as you said but maybe his performance this year(not last game haha). Borgie was injured last year so the takes him off the list. How about this year? Gilas still doesn't have that pure PG. Why did they not even consider Chris Ross?
my guess? lack of an outside shot.
and no diss to borgie, but i dont think hes on the same level as a player with the gilas guards. regardless, i think hes a very good player.
wilson and jimbo, i dont know. seems like gilas has very specific requirements for players. dont know if gilas sees them as great fits.
You can teach outside shooting but can't teach speed and athletism. Damn Bringas was considered but there were no indications at all that they were interested in Ross. gilas is full of combo guards who are great shooters but can't really drive to the basket. don't you think they need a very fast PG that can break any kind of defense whether it be in the UAAP, NCAA or FIBA. Jason Castro would be great great fit. Just what if they started the program 1 year earlier? They'll have the likes of Norwood, Dillenger, Mercado, Castro, Dela Pena and Borboran. Although I believe it was only in 2008 that the issues between SBP and BAP were somewhat resolved.
tell that to shaq's free throw coach. haha.
yeah, i agree that shooting is one of those things that are easily acquired. usually, all it takes is a lot of discipline and commitment to get better.
and yeah, im still hoping gilas eventually gets norwood and dillinger. both guys were on coach rajko's wish list after tianjin.
im sorry im not a big fan of norwood. the guy is just too lax. dillenger needs to give gabe some of his aggressiveness. How about the RR of the PBA? and damn his shooting impressed me in his last game. you think there's still a possibility that PBA teams will ever lend their players(much more their star player)? TNT MIGHT be willing but how about the other teams?
im not sure. when toroman named his powerade wish list (norwood, jared and japeth) after tianjin, it looked like he was going to get them. but that was before the whole japeth thing blew up.
but i doubt they were ever going to lend them full-time. their commitments would clearly have been to their mother teams. that means fewer practices and maybe missing out on the minor tune-up tourneys. and thats the kind of thing that caused the creation of the gilas team in the first place. we couldnt get full-time commitments from our pros, so we needed to get them from college kids.
norwood may be a little lax, but hes got great size for a ball-handler (he was a point guard at george mason) and brings a lot of athleticism. gabe will give you better defense, rebounding and finishing than chris tiu and can provide playmaking from the 2 spot. he'll be a nice addition.
